The Ivory Tower. And yet keeping a handle on where you're at is critical. But chances are the work before us is complicated enough. The components of project management should be kept as simple as possible. In our mind individual tasks have three states not started, started and complete. Everything else is guesswork, or worse. By keeping the duration of each task as short as possible, this level of granularity is plenty. Effectiveness comes from identifying all the tasks, capturing all their dependencies and estimating each accurately.
Project management is a means to an end. It provides the tools to articulate how we're going to get from A to Z. It gives us window through which we can see where we are along the way. And is supplies the information needed to make choices about our course. We believe that project success comes from tackling the biggest risks first, minimizing the critical path, using frequent milestones and keeping everyone's head in the game. To us, that means staying on the ground and getting our hands dirty.
